Olympic Torch and Ring Origins

The most beloved emblems of the modern Olympics have a decidedly dark past. The torch relay that culminates in the ceremonial lighting of the flame at Olympic stadium was ordered by Adolf Hitler, who tried to turn the 1936 Berlin Games into a celebration of the Third Reich. And it was Hitler's Nazi propaganda machine that popularized the five interlocking rings as the symbol of the Games.
Today, both are universally recognized icons of the Olympics.
But historians say neither had much, if anything, to do with the Games born centuries ago in Ancient Olympia. "The torch relay is so ingrained in the modern choreography that most people today assume it was a revival of a pagan tradition - unaware that it was actually concocted for Hitler's Games in Berlin," author Tony Perrottet writes in a new book, The Naked Olympics.
A sacred flame did burn 24 hours a day at Olympia. And relay racers passed a torch to light a sacrificial cauldron at some other ancient festivals. But the ancient Greeks opened their Olympics by word of mouth, sending heralds - not torchbearers - running through the streets.The modern tradition of spiriting the Olympic torch to the main stadium didn't become a fixture of the Games until 1936, when a 12-day run opened the Games in Berlin.The Olympic rings, another universally recognized symbol of the games since they made their debut in 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium, have their own Nazi connection.Originally, they were designed in 1913 by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the IOC and father of the modern Olympic movement, for a 1914 World Olympic Congress in Paris. They were supposed to symbolize the first five Olympics, but the congress disbanded when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo, triggering World War I.
2008: Phoenix Rising
The 2008 summer Olympics took place in Beijing, China from August 8 to August 24, 2008. The centerpiece of the 2008 Summer Olympics was the Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed "The Bird's Nest" because of its nest-like skeletal structure. The stadium hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics competition.

And keeping in theme with decapitated heads Ben picks up the director head and plays with it until he has the idea that he's David Beckham as he kicks the head across the field.

Global Rainbow is a large scale, spectacular outdoor laser projection created by the artist, Yvette Mattern. It consists of seven parallel beams of high specification laser light, representing the spectrum of the traditional seven colours of the rainbow, and is designed to be projected across large open sites, particularly densely populated areas. With the projection, the artist intends to encompass geographical and social diversity in its reach and symbolize hope.
Presented by amino for the first time in the UK Global Rainbow opens the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad year in three regions of the UK: north east and north west England, and Northern Ireland.
Starting on leap day, 29 February, the UK premiere of this stunning artwork takes place over five nights against the backdrop of the North Tyneside coastline. From 8 March, International Women’s Day, the rainbow is being projected over the city of Preston for four nights. Here, it launches We Play Challenge, the north west’s Cultural Olympiad public participation programme. It is one of the first events in the Preston Guild festival. Dating back to 1179, this is England’s oldest festival and takes place once every 20 years.
Starting on 14 March and ending on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March, the rainbow is being projected from the base of the landmark site of Scrabo Tower. For four nights, it passes over Newtownards, from where it follows the eastern shore of Strangford Lough and on, over the Ards Peninsula
Global Rainbow was initially created for projection in New York City on 19 January 2009 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) where it was projected from the top of a Wall Street skyscraper in downtown Manhattan. The beams extended from Brooklyn Bridge to the east and the Hudson River to the west, passing over Ground Zero. Subsequently, it has been shown in Berlin, Toulouse, Utrecht and Nantes.

Apotheosis (from Greek, apotheoun "to deify"; in Latin deificatio "making divine") is the glorification of a subject to divine level. The term has meanings in theology, where it refers to a belief, and in art, where it refers to a genre.

Very little is known about the god Bolon Yokte'. According to an article by Mayanists Markus Eberl and Christian Prager in British Anthropological Reports, his name is composed of the elements "nine", 'OK-te' (the meaning of which is unknown), and "god". He also appears in inscriptions from Palenque, Usumacinta, and La Mar as a god of war, conflict, and the underworld. In one stele he is portrayed with a rope tied around his neck, and in another with an incense bag, together signifying a sacrifice to end a cycle of years.
Based on observations of modern Mayan rituals, Gronemeyer and MacLeod claim that the stele refers to a celebration in which a person portraying Bolon Yokte' K'uh was wrapped in ceremonial garments and paraded around the site.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 115-metre-high (377 ft) observation tower in the Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The steel sculpture is Britain's largest piece of public art, and is intended to be a permanent, lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympics, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area. Sited between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, it allows visitors to view the whole Olympic Park from two observation platforms.

Dependent on the mechanical know-how of the notorious chimpanzees and penguins, their plan inevitably goes awry and they find themselves stranded in Monte Carlo, where they try to escape Europe from animal control led by Captain Chantel DuBois by joining up with a traveling circus by chance. Led by the venerable Siberian tiger Vitaly, the animal-centered circus has seen better days. During the course of a tour through a series of European cities that ends in a fabulous big top in the heart of London, Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria help Vitaly the tiger, Gia the jaguar, and Stefano the sea lion, rediscover their passion for show business and reinvent circus performance.

The Olympic Park in London, England, is a sporting complex under construction for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, situated to the east of the city adjacent to the Stratford City development. After the Olympics, the park is to be known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
The site covers parts of Stratford, Bow, Leyton and Homerton in East London.

Nuclear Presence In June 2010, it was reported during the development of the stadium site that it contained potentially harmful amounts of radioactive materials buried decades ago when the area was a landfill site. Documents obtained under a freedom-of-information request revealed that the radioactive waste from thorium and radium were buried in a disposal cell approximately 250 metres to the north of the stadium. The Olympics torch relay runs from 19 May – 27 July, prior to the games.The Olympic torch was also in Ireland during June's Mother Goddess Sequence, highlight from June 2nd to the 8th.
Opening Ceremony:
The Opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics will be called 'The Isles of Wonder’. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle will be the artistic director for the opening ceremony.A title based on a speech by Caliban in Shakespeare's The Tempest that will be referenced throughout the four ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1610–11 and first published in 1623 in the First Folio. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place by using illusion and skilful manipulation. There is no obvious single source for the plot of The Tempest, but researchers have seen parallels in Erasmus's Naufragium, Peter Martyr's De orbo novo, and an eyewitness report by William Strachey of the real-life shipwreck of the Sea Venture on the islands of Bermuda.

Danny Boyle has announced that the Olympic Stadium will be transformed into "the British countryside" for the Olympic Opening Ceremony on the 27 July, with a backdrop featuring farmyard animals and British landmarks such as Glastonbury Tor (The spot seems to have been called Ynys yr Afalon (meaning "The Isle of Avalon") by the Britons, and it is believed by some to be the Avalon of Arthurian legend.) with a large oak tree on top.

Boyle's quirky sense of humour is evident in the ideas for the ceremony and the pastoral scene, which include 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens, three sheep dogs, real grass and a plough. There are also clouds with fake rain just in case the night is clear and a game of cricket.

The line from the poem, "Bring me my Chariot of fire!" draws on the story of 2 Kings 2:11, where the Old Testament prophet Elijah is taken directly to heaven: "And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." The phrase has become a byword for divine energy, and inspired the title of the 1981 film, Chariots of Fire. The plural phrase "chariots of fire" is in reference to 2 Kings 6:16-18.

The
project came about after Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Olympics
Minister Tessa Jowell decided in 2008 that the Olympic Park needed "something extra". Johnson was believed to want something like the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty.
Designers were asked for ideas for an "Olympic tower" at least 100
metres (330 ft) high, and Orbit was the unanimous choice from various
proposals considered by a nine-person advisory panel.
Designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond, Kapoor said that one of the influences on his design for the tower was the Tower of Babel, the sense of "building the impossible" that "has something mythic about it."
Both believe that Orbit represents a new
way of thinking, "a radical new piece of structure and architecture
and art" that uses non-linearity – the use of "instabilities as
stabilities." The spaces inside the structure, in between the twisting steel, are "cathedral like", according to Balmond, while according to Kapoor, the intention is that visitors will engage with the piece as they wind "up and up and in on oneself" on the spiral walkway.Nicholas Serota, a member of the design panel, said that Orbit was a tower with an interesting twist, with "the energy you might traditionally associate with this type of structure but in a surprisingly female form".
According to Mittal, Orbit
was already the working title of the design by Kapoor and Balmond, as
it symbolised a continuous journey, a creative representation of the
"extraordinary physical and emotional effort" that Olympians undertake
in their continuous drive to do better. It was decided to keep this as the final name and prepend the name of Mittal's company ArcelorMittal as the project supporter.
On
the public announcement of the design Johnson conceded that it might
become known by something other than its official name, suggesting
"Colossus of Stratford" or the "Hubble Bubble", in reference to his belief that it resembles a giant shisha pipe (Cannabis = Apotheosis).
Jonathan Glancey of The Guardian described Orbit as "Olympian in ambition" and a "fusion between striking art and daring engineering", and said that, the Aquatics Centre apart, it represented the architecturally striking Joker in the pack,
given that the rest of the landscaping and architecture for the Games
"promises little to get excited about". He believed it would become a
"genuine eyecatcher" for the Olympics television coverage, with its
extraordinary form being a "strange and enticing marriage of sorts"
between the Eiffel Tower and the un-built early Soviet era Tatlin's Tower, with the biblical Tower of Babel as "best man".

the ceremony is to create "a picture of ourselves as a nation", with

of Danny Boyle's £27m opening ceremony extravaganza.
Boyle's quirky sense of humour is evident in the ideas for the ceremony and the pastoral scene, which include 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens, three sheep dogs, real grass and a plough. There are also clouds with fake rain just in case the night is clear and a game of cricket.
The large bell which
will be rung at the start of the ceremony at 9pm on July 27 will also
be rung at the finish, hopefully around 12.30am and signifies peace,
Boyle said."The bells didn't ring during the War but they rang when
peace was declared," Boyle said. "This is a wonderful way to start the
show with the sound of peace."
Stephen Daldry, the ceremonies executive director, said:
"This is not a show by committee, it has been created by Danny Boyle
and it represents all of the depth, imagination, humour and visceral
filmaking style Danny brings." While the show
will open with a rural pastoral vision that evokes William Blake and
Jerusalem, it is expected to evolve to take on a more urban hue. Boyle
said he hoped that the show would be unveiled like putting a puzzle
together, with the main puzzle being the site and method of lighting
the cauldron. However, nowhere on the model of the set is there a clue
to the cauldron's location.
The filmmaker, who said he had been moved by the passion
and enthusiasm of the Olympic torch relay, added: “It is not an easy
challenge to get the opening ceremony right, how can you present
something that feels decent and people recognise as being truthful, but
yet is a celebration?
The Opening Ceremony is likely to be watched by one
billion people and will enlist the help of more than 10,000 volunteers

"And did those feet in
ancient time" is a short poem by William Blake from the preface to his
epic Milton a Poem, one of a collection of writings known as the
Prophetic Books. The date on the title page of 1804 for Milton is

Within the first 3 minutes of Due Date, Peter Highman opens the film talking about the strangest dream he just had, where he's in a forest and misses the birth of his child while a Bear (Arthur means Bear), is there holding the baby instead of him.

Very next scene, Peter Highman is on the phone talking about what name to use for his child. First name he addresses is Theodore as in Teddy (Bear) Roosevelt and then he mentions the myth of King Arthur as a name for the child. (In front of a giant phallic building or a peter) "This was tough" as in a decision but the name game ruins it, he says as to many bad names rhyme with Arthur.
Then he mentions names of boys that can be girl names and the discussion of baby names abruptly ends. Scene cuts to Highman in cab and cabby talks about moving to Denver with the underground conspiracy movement, in which he arrives at the airport and is put on a no flight list which begins his road trip to LA from Atlanta,

Once at the hospital where Sarah (meaning Princess) is in labor, Peter and Ethan witness the birth of "Rosie Highman". Peter passes out in pain from a previous gunshot wound.
Ethan later recounts to Peter that he had assisted in Rosie's birth by cutting the umbilical cord, something that Peter had allegorically envisioned earlier in the film on a marijuana psychedelic trip, where Ethan was portrayed as a "Bear".

Will Rodman is a scientist at biotechnology company Gen-Sys who has been trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease and is testing a new gene therapy drug on chimpanzees. The drug, a modified virus, mutates the chimpanzees, giving them a human level of intelligence. A female chimp who believes her baby is being threatened goes on a rampage and is shot by security guards. Will's boss Steven Jacobs subsequently orders chimp handler Robert Franklin to euthanize the remaining test chimpanzees. Franklin cannot bring himself to kill the baby chimp and instead gives him to Will, who takes him home to raise. Will's father Charles , who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, names the baby chimp "Caesar." Caesar has inherited his mother's high intelligence and develops quickly.

Plus the new Superman movie will star a British actor, which nods to Prince William, the Superman (Jesus/Messiah-Antichrist) who is awaiting his full reveal, in relation to Smallville.

Tess learns that the planet Apokolips is coming to Earth to destroy humanity. Darkseid arrives and Lionel trades his soul for Lex's life. Possessing Lionel, Darkseid confronts Clark, who finally realizes what Jor-El was preparing him for his entire life. Clark accesses his power of flight and vanquishes Darkseid from Lionel's deceased body. A newly revived Lex kills Tess, but not before Tess uses a neurotoxin to erase all of Lex's memories.
Clark goes to the Fortress of Solitude and receives the suit Martha made for him before flying away to stop Apokolips from destroying Earth. By moving Apokolips away from Earth, Clark brings hope to humanity and breaks their connection to Darkseid. Moving ahead seven years, Lex is now President-elect of the United States, Clark and Lois are still trying to get married, and Clark has fully embraced his destiny as "Superman".

But the Royal Family, like the rest of us, are having to endure the uncharacteristically cold summer weather, with Wills faced to endure the chilly temperatures during the speedboat ride, which left him “soaked to the skin”. According to the Telegraph, Kate, Prince Harry, and a small group of close friends “roared with laughter” as they watched William bounce about on the rubber ring as he tried to cling on for dear life.The experience, which took place in Anglesey, near the couple’s North Wales rented cottage, is believed to be just one of several presents Kate got her husband of just over one year. The Duchess was also said to have commissioned a jeweller to design a handcrafted timepiece for the Prince, as well as posing for artist Nicky Phillips, who was expected to capture Kate’s beauty in a special portrait to be given to William on his landmark birthday. Meanwhile it looks like Kate and William’s North Wales boat trip could be one of the last experiences they enjoy in Anglesey, if rumours about the couple house-hunting in the Home Counties are true.

Morgana succeeds in stripping Merlin of his magic and he is helpless to aid Arthur who has decided to take on Morgana's forces at Camlann. To regain his magic Merlin travels to the Crystal Cave in the Valley of the Fallen Kings. By her spy Morgana knows all and entombs Merlin in the cave. Awakened by a vision of his father Merlins magic is restored and he warns Arthur of Morgana's battle plans while he sleeps. The battle commences and Merlin emerges from the cave as his destiny, Emrys.
Emrys arrives at Camlann as the battle is in full fury, and with his powerful magic he overpowers Morgana's troops, turning the tide in Arthur's favour. However, the battle culminates in Mordred dealing Arthur a fatal wound, only to receive one in return. Merlin confesses to a dying Arthur that he is Emrys and to save him they must travel to Avalon. On the shores of Avalon, Morgana makes a final attempt to murder Arthur, but she is killed by Merlin wielding Excalibur. In the end, Merlin cannot get Arthur to the isle in time. After thanking Merlin for everything he has done for him and for Camelot, Arthur dies in his arms. A grieving Merlin hides Excalibur in the waters of Avalon while Guinevere ascends the throne of Camelot with the knights at her side. In the present day, an immortal Merlin still waits for Arthur to rise again, as the Once and Future King is destined to do.
