Storm of the Century: Typhoon Haiyan

November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest tropical cyclones in recorded history to make landfall, hits the Visayas in the Philippines, with at least three people dead. (BBC News)

Typhoon Haiyan, known as Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, was an exceptionally powerful tropical cyclone that devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, in early November 2013. It is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record. The JTWC's unofficial estimate of one-minute sustained winds of 315 km/h (195 mph) would, by that measure, make Haiyan the most powerful storm ever recorded to strike land. Due to extensive damage and high death toll, PAGASA announced that the name, Yolanda, will be retired off the typhoon naming lists. (Wiki)

Haiyan (Chinese: 海燕; literally "petrel")

-Petrel comes from the Latin name for the Christian Saint Peter, and refers to the habits of certain species of birds to hover just above the ocean waves, with their feet barely touching the water, thus giving an appearance of walking on water, as St. Peter is said to have done. Peter was a prominent early Christian leader, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ according to the New Testament. He is venerated as a saint and traditionally considered to be the first bishop and Pope by the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Oriental Orthodoxy. (Wiki)

-Yolanda is a given name, of Greek origin but existing in many languages, meaning Violet. (Wiki)

November 8, 2013, Shark Tank: Season 5 Episode 8

During the Classic period, the name of the bird, φοίνιξ, was variously associated with the color purple, 'Phoenician', and the date palm. According to an etymology offered by the 6th- and 7th-century archbishop Isidore of Seville, the name of the phoenix derived from its purple-red hue, an explanation that has been influential. This association continued into the medieval period, albeit in a different fashion; the bird was considered "the royal bird" and therefore also referred to as "the purple one".(Wiki)

Philip: means "friend of horses"
Seymour: means "dark-skinned"
Hoffman: means "stewart"

Heroin has earned the nickname “horse” because it kicks equines into overdrive. Morphine and other opiates, which lull humans to sleep, also trigger the ancient equine flight response. In the wild, pursued by predators, a horse runs as fast as he can or dies. Given narcotics, a horse feels unnatural sleepiness creeping into his nervous system–sleepiness like the shock caused by the fatal bite of a carnivore. So the hopped up horse runs without reserve. If kept in his stall, he trots in circles until the dose finally ebbs. Let loose on a racetrack, he outruns any normal inhibition.(Link)

2014 Olympic Opening Ceremonies:

February 7, 2014,

Pre-ceremony activities included performances by the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. and the Ministry of Internal Affairs choir, who performed a version of Daft Punk’s "Get Lucky".

Opening:

The ceremony, titled "Dreams of Russia", opened with an on-screen video showing 11-year-old Liza Temnikova playing a character named Lyubov (Russian for 'love') reciting the Russian alphabet. Each letter is associated with images of a famous Russian person or landmark. Lyubov then flew into the air as she dreamed of grabbing the tail of a kite and being lifted far off the stage. Nine different floats, carrying Russian landscapes, passed beneath her as she slept.

Five large snowflakes descended into the stadium which expanded and joined to form the Olympic rings. However, a technical error caused the fifth ring not to expand (the red one considered until 1951 to represent continent America), and pyrotechnics did not go off from the rings.

Performances:

The 18-chapter, nearly three-hour opening ceremony began at the symbolic moment of 8:14 p.m. — 20:14, as time is counted here — and provided a majestic spectacle that included a glowing troika of horses made of light streaking through a snowbound sky, pulling in the Sun.

Lighting of Cauldron:

For the finale, tennis player Maria Sharapova brought the Olympic torch into the stadium. She handed it off to pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva who, in turn, passed it to wrestler Aleksandr Karelin. Karelin then passed the torch to gymnast Alina Kabaeva. Figure skater Irina Rodnina took the torch and was met by former ice hockey goalkeeper Vladislav Tretiak, handing the torch to him. Tretiak jogged out of the stadium alongside Rodnina. The pair then jointly lit the Olympic cauldron installed at the Sochi Medals Plaza in the Sochi Olympic Park to the music of the "Firebird Suite" by Igor Stravinsky. This was followed by a fireworks display across the area around Fisht Olympic Stadium, including the other sporting venues. Twenty-two tonnes of fireworks were lit as Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker score played.

In Slavic folklore, the Firebird is a magical glowing bird from a faraway land, which is both a blessing and a bringer of doom to its captor.

The Firebird is described as a large bird with majestic plumage that glows brightly emitting red, orange, and yellow light, like a bonfire that is just past the turbulent flame. The feathers do not cease glowing if removed, and one feather can light a large room if not concealed. In later iconography, the form of the Firebird is usually that of a smallish fire-colored peacock, complete with a crest on its head and tail feathers with glowing "eyes".

A typical role of the Firebird in fairy tales is as an object of a difficult quest. The quest is usually initiated by finding a lost tail feather, at which point the hero sets out to find and capture the live bird, sometimes of his own accord, but usually on the bidding of a father or king. The Firebird is a marvel, highly coveted, but the hero, initially charmed by the wonder of the feather, eventually blames it for his troubles.

2014 Winter Olympic Closing Ceremony:

February 23, 2014,

Theme:

The closing program presented "Reflections of Russia"; that is, highlights of Russian culture, presented through a European perspective. It was directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca.

Opening:

The closing ceremonies began with a countdown, at the conclusion of which the LED forest turned on. Lyubov, the girl from the opening ceremony, entered the stadium in a rowing boat with two clowns and two children named Yuri and Valentina. An image representing the Black Sea below appeared on the floor. Many volunteers appeared below them dressed as sea fish, which then combined to form four Olympic Rings and a dot, a reference to the malfunction of one of the rings at the Opening Ceremony failing to open properly. After a pause, the volunteers forming the dot "opened" into the fifth Ring.

Performances:

The ceremony continued with a number of "chapters" reflecting different aspects of Russian culture."The World of Malevich, Kandinsky and Chagall", "Music", "Theatre", "Literature" and "The Magic of Circus".

The Olympic Hymn was sung and an honour guard lowered the Olympic flag. The flag was passed by Anatoly Pakhomov, the mayor of Sochi, to Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, who then passed it to Seok-Rae Lee, the mayor of Pyeongchang, which will host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The flag was waved four times before it was taken from the stadium.
The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang provided an eight-minute segment to introduce Koreans to the world.

Extinguishing of the Cauldron:

The games were formally closed by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach at 22:04 MSK. He invited the world to assemble in four years' time in Pyeongchang for the 2018 Olympic Games. A final appearance was made by the three children accompanied by giant animatronic models of the three official mascots of the 2014 Olympic Games. A series of large mirrors combined and floated into the air to reveal the Olympic Flame. The Olympic Flame in the stadium and outside was blown out by the Polar Bear, who shed a tear after the flame went out – an homage to Misha and the 1980 Summer Olympics closing ceremony.A remix of Aleksandra Pakhmutova's "Goodbye, Moscow" played during the extinguishing of the flame. The 1,000 members of the Pan-Russian Children choir assembled with the mascots carrying small flames in their hands. The ceremony ended with a fireworks display set to the music of Tchaikovsky.

2014 Paralympic Opening Ceremonies:

[Paralympic Mascots: Ray of Light and Snowflake come from different planets. Ray of Light comes from a planet where it's always hot, while Snowflake came to earth on an icy comet.]

 March 7, 2014,

Theme:

The Opening Ceremony presented "Breaking the Ice".

 Opening:

The opening ceremony was titled "Breaking the Ice" and centered on breaking down barriers and celebrated Russian culture. It opened with a rhythmic dance featuring 126 performers dressed in the colors of the Russian flag. Russian dance and music were featured throughout, as performances were interspersed with animated segments featuring drawings of the firebird, a staple of Russian mythology by Alexander Petrov.

Performances:

Yulia Samoilova performed a song entitled "Together." during which, overcome by emotion, she cried. While she was singing, an icebreaker named Mir (Peace) sailed through the stadium.
During his speech at the opening ceremony International Paralympic Committee president Philip Craven noted that Russia had declined to host the 1980 Paralympics in conjunction with the 1980 Summer Olympics, making this the first time Russia has hosted the game. He called on spectators to have "barrier-free mind" just as "the city of Sochi has built a barrier-free environment for athletes and officials to enjoy". Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the games open, drawing loud cheers.

 Lighting of Cauldron:

Russian Paralympians Olesya Vladykina and Sergey Shilov shared the honor of lighting the Paralympic torch. The opening ceremony ended with a video that spoke out against discrimination.

2014 Paralympic Closing Ceremony:

March 16, 2014,

Theme:

The closing program presented "Reaching the Impossible".

The ceremony started with a group of wheelchair dancers moving gracefully across the field of play, joined by luminous aerialists overhead. All 30 Sochi 2014 gold medalists from the host nation carried the Russian flag into the stadium as the Russian State Children’s Chorus Assembly sang an a capella version of the national anthem.

Abstract artwork was brought to life by a center stage cast of 462 performers dressed in bright colours who formed geometric shapes to display different images, including illustrations of various winter sports.A man in a wheelchair then appeared on the scene, faced with the challenge of climbing a 15-metre rope. When he accepted the challenge and reached the top of the rope, he became a flying apostrophe between the letters ‘I’ and ‘M’ in ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ to create ‘I’M POSSIBLE,’ with a spectacular fireworks display celebration the transformation.

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minster Dmitry Kozak spoke, saying: “These Games have gone far beyond sports competitions. They showed what people from different countries and nationalities different cultures and traditions are capable of when they are united by a single goal and an inspired dream.
“Attitudes toward people with an impairment have changed among Russian society. The Paralympic Winter Games have become a catalyst for our efforts to create a barrier-free environment in Russia. The Games are over, but we promise that this important work will continue throughout our vast country.”

8,000 Sochi 2014 Paralympic volunteers were recognised as heros of the Games. Soon after, a cast of performers in red, blue and green transformed the Paralympic Agitos into a giant heart, embracing 51 volunteers at its center.Visually impaired pianist Oleg Akkuratov played the Paralympic Anthem as the Paralympic Flag was lowered and passed on to the Mayor of PyeongChang before the South Korean flag was raised and the PyeongChang 2018 Games performers gave a magical performance.

An enchanting cast filled the stage for the Closing Ceremony finale, putting on a huge dance sequence that included four international voices – Jose Carreras –Nafset Chenib, Diana Gurtskaya and Valeriy Kozlovsky – and ended with a large fireworks display across the entire Olympic Park.
