Welcome to Hell Pt.3 (Eclipse Edition)

The word eclipse generally refers to those instances in which one object moves into the "shadow" of another.

1)The partial or complete obscuring, relative to a designated observer, of one celestial body by another.
-The period of time during which such an obscuration occurs.

2) A temporary or permanent dimming or cutting off of light.

July 11, 2010, A total solar eclipse occurs in the south Pacific Ocean. (BBC News)

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth's view of the Sun. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun, blocking all direct sunlight, turning "day" into "darkness". (WP)

The eclipse was one of the most remote in recorded history. It was visible over much of the southern Pacific Ocean, touching several atolls in French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Easter Island, and Argentina's Patagonian plains.

Totality was observed for four minutes and 41 seconds (4:41) on Easter Island.

The eclipse occurred at the same time that the final game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup was being played in South Africa. (WP)

Spain Motto: Plus Ultra - "Further Beyond"

The true origins of the name España and its cognates "Spain" and "Spanish" are disputed. The ancient Roman name for Iberia, Hispania, may derive from poetic use of the term Hesperia to refer to Spain, reflecting Greek perception of Italy as a "western land" or "land of the setting sun" (Hesperia) and Spain, being still further west, as Hesperia ultima.

There are also claims that España derives from the Basque word Ezpanna meaning "edge" or "border", another reference to the fact that the Iberian peninsula constitutes the southwest of the European continent. (WP)

(Land of setting sun/Border/Edge = Day into Night)

Spain also being represented through their Coats of Arms formally and not the National Spanish Federation logo are commonly referred to as La Roja (The Red One) and La Furia Roja (The Red Fury).

Trophy

FIFA World Cup Trophy Produced by Bertoni, Milano, depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. Gazzaniga described the trophy thus, "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of "Victory."

The World Cup trophy has been visually compared to the 2005 "War of the Worlds" movie poster.

War of the Worlds has been interpreted as criticism of imperialism, the "red weed" could symbolize the non-native fauna colonizers introduced to the Americas, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. More fancifully, the red weed could be seen as a metaphor for territorial expansion. (WP)

The red weed is a fictional plant native to Mars in the novel The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. It is this plant that supposedly gives Mars its dull red color. It is one of the several types of plants brought to Earth possibly accidentally by the invading Martians, but the only one that truly was able to adapt and grow widespread on Earth. When it is exposed to water, it grows and reproduces explosively, flooding the neighboring countryside as it clogs streams and rivers.

In Steven Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds film, the presence of the red weed on Earth is clearly intentional. Once they have a strong hold of the planet, the invaders take captured humans and drain their bodily fluids, which act as a fertilizer for the red weed, helping it grow and cover the planet. Though it is never stated that these invaders come from Mars (the "Red Planet"), the script indicates that the weed is abundantly present on their world as well, suggesting the two share a superficial resemblance.

However, what exactly makes up their red weed, whether it is a natural vegetation or what gives it its color on their world, is unknown; though it is believed by a character in the movie that the aliens fertilise the weed with human blood, possibly adding to its redness. It is also stated in the script that the weed is fierce enough to flourish in spite of the conditions that forced the aliens to find refuge on a new world. But despite its tenacity to survive such a harsh environment, much like in the novel, the red weed is killed by Earth's bacteria and turned into an ash-like dust and is blown away in the wind before it can be examined. 1. WoW! Love the post. The pic at the end with the two triangles, one pointing up and the other down is really interesting. Calling it "Devil" in the graphic is also interesting. Strange. A really strange thought keeps coming to mind, "One man's messiah is another man's devil". Weird! Still, really like your blog. Very cool!
